DoseMath
How this is calculated
How to use this calculator
- Choose your syringe. Pick the insulin syringe you will draw with: U-100 in 0.3 mL (30 units), 0.5 mL (50 units), or 1.0 mL (100 units), or a U-40 syringe.
- Enter the peptide in your vial, in milligrams (for example 5 mg or 10 mg).
- Enter the bacteriostatic water you are adding to the vial, in millilitres.
- Enter your dose per injection, in micrograms or milligrams.
- Read your draw. The calculator shows the exact units to draw and marks that point on the syringe, and warns you if the dose falls between marks, exceeds the syringe, or looks like a 1000× mix-up.
Questions & terms
What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added. The benzyl alcohol lets a reconstituted vial be used over several days. It is what is usually meant by “BAC water.”
How do I calculate how many units to draw?
Divide the peptide mass by the bacteriostatic water to get the concentration (mg/mL), divide your dose by that concentration to get the volume in millilitres, then multiply by 100 for the units on a U-100 insulin syringe. DoseMath does this for you and marks the point on the syringe.
What does U-100 mean?
A U-100 insulin syringe is graduated at 100 units per millilitre, so 100 units is 1.0 mL, 50 units is 0.5 mL, and 10 units is 0.1 mL. A U-40 syringe is 40 units per millilitre.
How many doses are in my vial?
Divide the total peptide in the vial by your dose per injection. DoseMath shows this as “doses in vial.”
Is DoseMath medical advice?
No. DoseMath only performs arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It does not recommend, supply, or endorse any compound or dose, and it is not a substitute for a licensed clinician.
Glossary
- Reconstitution
- Dissolving a freeze-dried (lyophilized) peptide in liquid so it can be measured and drawn.
- Concentration
- How much peptide is in each millilitre of liquid, in mg/mL or mcg/mL.
- Units
- The marks on an insulin syringe. On a U-100 syringe, 100 units is 1.0 mL.
- Draw
- The amount you pull into the syringe, read in units at the marked point.
